Language Art

Symbols are the foundation of language. Language is communication. It is expression. It is art.

“There is something about words. In expert hands, manipulated deftly, they take you prisoner. Wind themselves around your limbs like spider silk, and when you are so enthralled you cannot move, they pierce your skin, enter your blood, numb your thoughts. Inside you they work their magic.” – Diane Setterfield, The Thirteenth Tale

Have you ever read a book so real, you missed the characters once you were finished? Did you find yourself thinking about them throughout the day? If not, you are truly missing out. Authors are the children of magicians and artists. They paint with words to make you see the invisible. They tug on your brain with stories about people and you will struggle with the reality that you will never actually meet them because to you, they are real.

Old Books

In our visual world, people don’t read like they used to. Digital media has taken over and it is no surprise. It is believed that human attention span is decreasing. People will much rather watch a video clip than sit down and read a book. However, books are eternal. The world can not afford for authors like Walt Whitman, Edgar Allen Poe, Jane Austen, and so many others to be forgotten.

There is so much to learn from their writing styles and story ideas. There is a reader and writer in all of us. We must awaken our sleepy poets. Say what you need to say. Write what you need to write.
